Q & A with andrew gray

Q & A with

andrew gray

HOW SHOULD THE COLOR GRAY BE SPElled?

The color gray is spelled with an “a” because my last name is spelled with an “a” and I really need this so please just go with it.

What’s your favorite part of the design process?

I would have to say ideation. I love starting from a blank screen, creating nonsense, and then iterating until I have something meaningful. Sometimes this is a quick process; other times I’m stuck in an infinite loop of “design it, doubt it, delete it, and repeat”. Even so, it’s always a fun roller coaster ride.

Are you on letterboxd?

I most definitely am! I consider myself somewhat of a cinephile and love love love going to the movies.

What does your workspace look like?

My latest upgrade: the Vitsœ 606 shelving system. It’s lived up to every bit of the hype.

Light mode or dark mode?

My portfolio says otherwise but I definitely prefer dark mode.

What’s your favorite sitcom?

Modern Family, forever and always. As for honorable mentions, I would say Brooklyn 99, Parks & Rec, and 30 Rock.

Have you ever published to the figma community?

Yes! Check out my profile here.

Do you have any pets?

Plants. I have plants. But I did grow up with dogs and love hangin with my parents’ dog Walter. He is the sweetest, most chaotic golden retriever you’ll ever meet.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DESIGN?

My career started as a software engineer (what I majored in) but it soon became clear that my true passion was design. Even though I’m no longer coding, I still get to flex my technical and creative problem-solving skills on a daily basis. Pair that with a people-first mindset and you get the recipe for a great designer.

What are your hobbies outside of design?

I gravitate towards anything that will spike my adrenaline. This includes but is not limited to — skiing, surfing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, and karaoke.

What are your go-to tools?

Arc for my browser, Spotify for tunes, Figma for design and prototyping, Framer Sites for website building, Spline for 3D, and Apple Notes for all my random thoughts and bookmarks.

Which artists do you have on repeat?

ODESZA, Olivia Dean, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Caamp, Parcels, SZA, Tame Impala, and Royel Otis to name a few.

Should designers...

Imma stop you right there.
